The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) empowers all students to better understand themselves and their own learning style in order to develop self-advocacy and self-efficacy. Learning support in the CTL is framed within the school’s six core values, emphasizing one’s personal responsibility in overcoming academic challenges and the tenacity to do so while demonstrating humility in accessing supports in the school community.
Accomodations
Accommodations are granted to students with complete and updated (within the last 3 years) psycho-educational testing and a thorough review by CTL faculty. Comprehensive psycho-educational testing includes a full cognitive battery and educational evaluation in addition to any diagnosis. A psycho-educational or neuropsychological report, conducted within 3 years, that includes normed assessments such as cognitive and educational batteries. The report must include the standard and percentile scores of all testing, as well as a detailed discussion regarding the impact of the individual’s current cognitive and emotional/behavioral functioning that may impact the educational environment. A medical diagnosis, in and of itself, is not sufficient documentation. without data to substantiate the impact of a diagnosis on one’s ability to access their education.
The accommodations offered at MBS allow a student to access the college preparatory curriculum without altering, or modifying, the content of the academic program. The accommodations offered at MBS are:
- Preferential seating
- Use of a digital recorder for note taking
- Use of a computer for in-class essays and note-taking
- Extended time (up to 50%) for tests and quizzes
- Alternate testing location
- No Scantron - Mark directly in the test booklet
- Multiple Day Testing: The ability to take exams and standardized tests (i.e. ACT, SAT) greater than 90 minutes in length in segments and/or multi-day formats.
Services
- Manage all formal learning accommodations for students grades 6-12
- Consult with teachers and parents/guardians regarding students’ learning needs and challenges
- Make recommendations for academic support services based on a documented disability
- Provide small group strategic instruction for academic subject areas (1-5 students) mainly for grades 6-10, referred to as “Study Strategies”
- Meet with students one-on-one periodically to assess progress
- Guided Homework Program - Middle School ONLY - after school for one hour, Tuesday through Thursday. (No busing available) Two learning specialists are available to help in all academic areas
- Manage accommodation requests for College Board (PSAT, SAT and AP exams) and ACT exams.
