The human brain is one of the most exciting horizons of scientific discovery and exploration in the 21st century, and neurologists learn more about it each day. This course is designed to introduce students to neuroscience in an immersive classroom environment. How do we learn new things? Feel? Perceive? Act? Pay attention? Memorize?  In a hands-on class, students will gain an introduction to key ideas in the field of neuroscience and a foundation with which to pursue further studies.

Based in the Digital Art Studio in the Center for Innovation and Design, students in this course will be introduced both to the fundamentals of drawing and to the techniques of drawing and sketching made possible by digital tools. Whether students are occasional dabblers in visual art or experienced digital artists, they will find cutting-edge tools and programs at their fingertips and opportunities for creative collaboration. Students will learn how to display their work on a personalized website, developing a portfolio that will accompany them through their academic career. Skills emphasized will include drawing from reference, anatomy, and stylized drawing.

What is your brain like on origami? In addition to developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and concentration, the ancient practice of paper folding is also a workout for the mind. Origami  challenges us on a cognitive level by lighting up both sides of the brain, in the tactile, motor, and visual centers. While it’s often used as a therapeutic practice for relaxation and anxiety, you’ll also be subtling working on your memory, non-verbal thinking, attention, 3D comprehension, and imagination.
