Morristown Beard School senior Michael Sciarra ’22 is in some pretty elite company after being named a finalist in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.
The pool of nationwide finalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. The group was selected out of 1.6 million students who earned qualifying PSAT scores for achieving the highest scores.
Sciarra and the 15,000 other finalists nationwide will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 Merit Scholarship Awards that will be offered in the spring. To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the Head of School, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance.
At Morristown Beard School, Sciarra is a member of the varsity baseball team which captured the NJSIAA North Jersey, Non-Public B title last spring and received the Team Academic Excellence award from the American Baseball Coaches Association for the sixth year in a row. He is also a member of the School’s BFI (Business, Finance and Investment) Club.
Last spring, Sciarra was inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, and was honored for contributing more than 100 hours of community service. He has organized numerous collections for the nonprofit organization Pitch In For Baseball & Softball, which accepts and distributes used equipment for children so that they can play regardless of their financial circumstances. He also volunteers with the Knights of Columbus and the Department for Persons with Disabilities.
He hopes to pursue a business degree in college.
National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in April.
