Humanities Program

The MBS Upper School humanities program asks ninth-grade students to place the study of History, English and World Languages in dialogue, recognizing that these disciplines allow us to interrogate and make sense of the human experience. By thinking critically and creatively, students investigate cultures and communities around the world and across time, while tracing the threads that have shaped history. Emphasizing multicultural awareness and perspectives, the humanities program urges students to bring the richness of the world into focus.

The program emphasizes analytical and creative modes of writing, pattern recognition, presentations, inquiry-based learning, close reading, developing and honing arguments and explanations, discerning underlying connections, and practicing civil discourse through discussion-driven coursework.
