Writing the World: An Immersive Journey Through Japan

As part of the Upper School Global Studies program, students traveled to Japan for an immersive experience centered on storytelling and writing.

From the moment they arrived in Tokyo, students explored a dynamic blend of culture, technology, and tradition. They visited teamLab Planets, explored neighborhoods like Tsukiji Market, Ginza, and Harajuku, and experienced iconic sites such as Shibuya Crossing and Meiji Jingu Shrine. In Ueno Park, they saw the first signs of cherry blossoms, while hands-on experiences like making okonomiyaki brought everyday culture to life.

The journey continued in Yamanashi, where students took part in a meaningful exchange with Minobusan High School, an experience that was even featured on a local news broadcast. They deepened their cultural understanding through a traditional temple stay, participating in activities such as a Buddhist ceremony, cooking, and calligraphy. In Kyoto, students explored historic landmarks including Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and Fushimi Inari Shrine.

Returning to Tokyo, students engaged with modern storytelling through a manga workshop in Akihabara and concluded their trip with a visit to the Studio Ghibli Museum. Throughout the experience, students developed their voices as storytellers while building lasting connections and gaining a deeper appreciation for Japan’s culture and community.
