Last weekend, twelve budding writers and four dedicated teachers ventured to Cornwall House in Hardwick, NJ, for the eleventh annual MBS Writers' Retreat—a weekend devoted to creativity, contemplation, and connection.
In keeping with tradition, the group began by ceremoniously saying goodbye to their phones, setting the tone for a distraction-free immersion in writing and community. With screens set aside, the students dove into their personal writing journeys, working on projects ranging from poetry and personal essays to novel chapters, a fairy tale, and even a sitcom episode.
Throughout the weekend, the retreat featured a blend of solo work and collaborative inspiration. Students and teachers took part in a series of writing exercises crafted to spark imagination and deepen craft. Continuing a new tradition begun last year by Brad Turner P '26, the group also practiced the art of mindful observation. They explored the natural surroundings, recording their thoughts and impressions, and transformed their reflections into poetry rooted in the beauty of the outdoors.
Of course, no retreat would be complete without moments of connection beyond the page. Between writing sessions, the group enjoyed scenic hikes, late-night stargazing under clear skies, and plenty of warm drinks—tea and hot chocolate flowed freely as conversations sparked ideas and friendships.
The student participants were Chris Blancuzzi '26, Katherine Chandler '26, Jack Gonyea '25, Shaylla Gonzaga '26, Andrew Ikhelson '28, Julia Karosen '26, Maya LeVasseur '26, Maria Pimenta '27, Gemma Schmid '27, Jay Spencer '25, Will Spencer '25, and Sinead Tuttle-Lerner '28. Chaperoning this inspiring weekend were Lisa Tilton-Levin P '19, 23, Darren Lovelock, Kate Muttick '97, and Brad Turner P '26.
As always, the retreat left students refreshed, and inspired, each carrying with them new words, new ideas, and new memories.
