Students Design Creative Carry Systems in Critical Making Course

This week, MBS Middle School students in Matt Martino’s Critical Making course designed their own creative carry systems as part of an activity called “Nomads.”

In groups of four, the students were tasked with designing carry systems for a fish, a moose, and a T-Rex. The creatures had to transport a series of objects including large cardboard rings, storage cubes, round dowels, and small cylinders. To add to the challenge, some objects had to be easily accessible, others couldn’t get wet, while other objects were supposedly explosive.

The students could only use a limited amount of paper, tape and scissors to solve the problem, so being creative and efficient was the name of the game!

After devising their prototypes, the students shared their designs with their classmates. Each student then wrote a positive comment about another person’s work explaining what they think works well with their design. The students also discussed the challenges that they faced and ways they could revise their prototypes.
