Stecker '22 Commits to Play Ice Hockey at Penn State

Congratulations to MBS junior Leah Stecker ’22, who recently committed to play women’s ice hockey at Penn State. She was named the NJ.com Girls Ice Hockey Player of the Year this past season after tallying 16 goals and 20 assists as she helped guide the Crimson to a Prep Championship and State Championship title. 

Many of her points came in clutch situations. She notched five of her 16 goals in the final two games of the season. Two of those goals came at the Prudential Center in Newark, where she led MBS to the inaugural State Invitational Tournament title, a 3-0 win over Summit High School.

MBS Head Coach Bruce Driver moved Stecker from defense to forward in her freshman season, and she responded by collecting 21 goals and 16 assists.

“She’s a very smooth skater and deceptively fast too,” Driver said. “She does a great job protecting the puck and doesn’t throw pucks into areas that are dangerous. To watch her play the game, it’s often effortless and she has the wherewithal to create time and space for herself.”

In the future, Stecker says she doesn’t care what position she plays; she simply wants to help MBS continue its success.

“I just really want to win,” she said. “I want to win next year’s state title and preps. Whatever I can do to make the team better. I want to have success next year and as a senior.”

Stecker has also played for the New Jersey Colonials Youth Girls Team throughout her career. Next year, she'll be playing for the Junior Flyers 19U Girls Team.
