Paul Detre '20 Interviews Pro Golfer Jason Day on his Podcast

MBS senior Paul Detre ’20 recently had the thrill of interviewing golf legend Jason Day on his podcast, “No Affiliation,” as the 12-time PGA tour champion joined the show to talk about his current life, his early career, and winning major championships.

Detre, a captain of the MBS varsity golf team, first met Jason Day in 2015 and was fortunate enough to be his guest at numerous tour events and participate in his charity golf outing. “Through these events we have gotten to know each other and he heard about my podcast, and offered to come on and chat with me about his golf game and the current situation,” said Detre.

Detre has followed Jason Day’s career since the 2013 Masters Tournament when Day had a share of the Sunday lead but narrowly missed out on a playoff. “I loved his golf swing from a technical standpoint, and the way he plays the game with impeccable finesse and power was something I wanted to model my game after,” said Detre. “He instantly turned him into one of my favorite players.”

He said that interviewing Day was a rollercoaster of emotions. “At the beginning I was nervous as Jason is a professional In a field that I want to pursue, so being able to talk to him outside the PGA Tour world was definitely a little scary for me at first,” said Detre. “However, he’s a great guy, and made the conversation easy, and it flowed naturally. The hardest part was that I only had 30 minutes to try and get a thousand questions in.”

Detre has been an avid sports fan since he was little and has always enjoyed watching and discussing games.  He is originally from Pittsburgh where “sports are part of your DNA,” and he remembers his parents yelling at him for constantly wearing his Steelers jersey to school. When a friend’s mother suggested that he start his own sports podcast, he jumped at the idea. “I’ve loved every part of it since, from sound editing, to helping make the design for it, to website monitoring, and content creation,” he said. “Every part of the podcast is a ton of fun.”

Detre will attend Bate College in Lewiston, Maine next fall and although he is currently undecided on his major, one thing is for certain — he plans to continue his podcast. “I will continue to do it as long as I possibly can and hopefully get more guests, continue to grow, and most importantly, continue to love the process of making it,” he said.
