MBS Middle School Students Tackle Digital Ethics at REBOOT Jr. Summit

MBS Middle School students recently stepped onto the digital frontline at the REBOOT Jr. Summit at Kent Place, immersing themselves in the complex and ever-evolving world of online ethics, safety, and decision-making.

In a fast-moving digital landscape shaped by deepfakes, misinformation, and constant social sharing, students were challenged to think critically about their online presence and responsibilities. The interactive, five-hour summit provided a hands-on learning experience designed to help students navigate some of the internet’s most pressing issues with confidence and awareness.

Throughout the day, students engaged in a series of dynamic workshops and activities. In the Deepfake Challenge, they learned to identify the subtle differences between AI-generated and human-created images, while also gaining insight into how easily digital content can be manipulated. Sessions on Digital Red Flags helped students recognize common signs of misinformation and phishing attempts, equipping them with practical skills to evaluate the credibility of what they encounter online.

One of the most engaging moments of the summit came during the Social Media “Sides of the Room” activity, where students debated the ethics of what should and should not be shared publicly. This high-energy discussion encouraged students to consider multiple perspectives and reflect on the real-world impact of their digital choices.

Students also took a deep dive into online privacy, exploring how trackers collect data and learning strategies to better protect their digital footprint. These conversations reinforced the importance of maintaining personal security in an increasingly connected world.

Opportunities like the REBOOT Jr. Summit reflect Morristown Beard School’s commitment to learning beyond the classroom. By attending summits and engaging with real-world challenges, MBS students gain valuable experiences that extend their education in meaningful and relevant ways.
