On Monday night, November 15, members of the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) updated the community on the School’s DEIB initiatives and the work of the Racial Justice Task Force as part of a special Zoom session.
The presentation began with a welcome from Head of School Liz Morrison, who underscored the importance of the School’s DEIB work and thanked the community for their commitment to these ongoing efforts.
“I’m impressed with how much MBS has accomplished, but while there is much to celebrate, we remain committed to continued growth and improvement in the area of DEIB,” said Mrs. Morrison.
MBS Director of DEIB Klarissa Karosen noted that a pillar of the 2021-2026 Strategic Plan is dedicated to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging and includes recommendations put forth by the Racial Justice Task Force. She emphasized the importance of engaging in authentic DEIB work and addressing institutional changes that need to happen for MBS to live up to its values and mission.
She presented an overview of initiatives that are taking place, highlighting a number of areas including: an examination of the School’s code of conduct and policies, faculty and staff hiring and retention, investing resources into DEIB initiatives, curricular and co-curricular updates, and work being done in Athletics, Admission, and Advancement.
Mrs. Karosen also spoke about how her position as Director of DEIB has evolved and how the DEIB Office has grown. She introduced A’Dorian Murray-Thomas, the Associate Director of DEIB, and Michael McGrann, the Coordinator of Middle School DEIB Initiatives.
