Oceanography Class Travels to Sandy Hook

On Friday, October 15, the Oceanography class traveled to Sandy Hook, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, where they gained first-hand experience with some of the concepts they have been studying in class.

The students saw how coastal processes affect the transport of sand along the Jersey shore, and looked at the impacts of human attempts to modify the shore using groins, jetties, and beach replenishment. They also spent some time using seine nets in the bay to catch some wildlife and discuss specific adaptations to living in a brackish environment.

The Oceanography class is a sophomore elective offered by the Science Department and is part of the Global Citizenship cohort of the Interdisciplinary Concentrations Program (ICP).

Faculty members Brad Turner and Stephanie Kealy served as chaperones for the trip.
