Middle School Students Skype with French Pen Pals

On Thursday, May 16th, Soni Dougherty’s 8th Grade French students spent their lunchtime Skyping with their pen pals from Les Sables d’Olonne.

After writing letters and exchanging holiday gifts through the mail, the students were able to speak via Skype and ‘see’ their French pen pals in their classroom in France.

The students chatted about a number of subjects — discussing their upcoming school musicals, summer plans and graduation events, and comparing the food in their respective cafeterias.

The pen pal experience began five years ago after the MBS 6th Grade geography boat, Crimson Tide, was discovered on the shores of Les Sables d'Olonne. Since that time, all of Mme. Dougherty's French 8 students have enjoyed pen pal communication across the Atlantic with students from the College Amiral, a private middle school in the French seaside town.

The Crimson Tide was recently refurbished by a technical nautical high school in France and was returned to MBS this spring.
