Middle School Chess Players Make Their Move!

Congratulations to this year’s MBS Middle School team for placing first overall and to 7th Grader Robert Magnotta for placing third individually at the Chess Consortium at Central Middle School in Stirling on October 8th.

This year’s MBS chess players were: Nimal Amarasiri ’26, Robert Magnotta ’25, Alex McMahon ’25, Darius Payne ’26, Brandon Soos ’25, and Jonah Tinkelman ’24.  They were accompanied by Middle School history teacher Cathy Kellstrom, who said that the students represented MBS extremely well. “It was a very competitive morning and a lot of fun for the students involved,” said Mrs. Kellstrom. “I am so proud of this group!”

In addition to experiencing the thrill of competition, the students were also able to make some new friends at the event.  Other participating middle schools included Delbarton, Oratory Prep, Central Middle School, Newark Academy, The Peck School, and Ridgedale Middle School. Newark Academy placed second, while Delbarton took third.

Other schools in the Consortium include: Oak Knoll School, St. Virgil’s, and Frelinghuysen School. Throughout the year, this Consortium regularly participates in fun and friendly competitions, including the World Language Day event in the spring, which is hosted by Morristown-Beard School.
