MBS Students Discover Career Pathways in Finance During Barclays Visit

On Tuesday, February 4, after a late-January snowstorm delayed the original plans, students from the Advanced Seminar Economics class and the Business, Finance, and Investment (BFI) Club headed to New York City for a visit to Barclays to get an inside look at the exciting world of iinvestment banking.

The group was welcomed by MBS parent Mike Webb P’24, '26, Managing Director and Global Head of Liquid Financing, who provided an overview of investment banking. They then heard from several analysts and speakers who addressed topics including cross-industry and global experience, prime derivative services, equity research and product management, prime origination, institutional equity sales, fixed income sales and trading, and Barclays’s internship program.

Students learned about a range of topics, including how the industry is leveraging AI and the variety of products and services offered by Barclays. They were also given an internship overview, gaining a glimpse into Barclays’s fast-paced 10-week program, which exposes interns to multiple areas, including client-facing roles, back-office operations, legal, compliance, risk management, and other essential functions.

Students were struck by how varied each individual’s path was to their current position and by the practical advice they were offered about the importance of curiosity, problem-solving, interpersonal skills, and teamwork in the industry.

The day ended with an exciting tour of Barclays’ trading floor.

Barclays has hosted MBS students four times since 2015, each visit providing a meaningful and valuable experience. The group, along with the entire MBS community, is deeply grateful to Mr. Webb and everyone at Barclays for making these opportunities possible.

Students who participated in the trip were: Oliver Blum '26 Philip John Cichlar '26 Evan Daniels '26 Declan Drury '27 Rye Fleming '26 Trevor Gatz '26 Isabel Jaffe '26 Liam Johnson '27 Nathan Luther '26 Sarah Marine '26 Ashley Parker '26 Jack Rosten '26 Rebecca Schwartz '26 Benjamin Tofias '26 Isabella Webb '26 Charlotte White '26
