MBS Shows Nominated for 23 Montclair Theatre Night Awards

The Morristown Beard School productions of Be More Chill (Upper School), Dead Man Walking (Upper School) and Guys & Dolls, Jr. (Middle School) have been honored with a total of 23 nominations in the annual Montclair State University Theatre Night Awards.  Congratulations to the cast and crew of all three shows!

Last year’s Middle School musical, Guys & Dolls, Jr., received six nominations:

·      Outstanding Achievement in Period/Fantasy Costume Design for a Middle School Play or Musical - Ben Krauss
·      Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design for a Middle School Play or Musical - Paul Fisher
·      Outstanding Achievement in New Media/Special Effects for a Middle School Play or Musical - Nicholas Marmo
·      Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Middle School Musical - Jake Breslow
·      Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Middle School Musical - Jamie Coffer
·      Outstanding Achievement by an Acting Ensemble of a Middle School Musical

The 2023 fall play, Dead Man Walking, received eight nominations:

·      Outstanding Achievement in Contemporary Costume Design for a Play - Bettina Bierly
·      Outstanding Achievement in Live or Original Music - Paul Fisher
·      Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Historical Drama - Henry D'Andrea
·      Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Historical Drama - Indiya Weinnman
·      Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Historical Drama - Bridget Ewing
·      Outstanding Acting Ensemble in a Historical Drama
·      Outstanding Achievement in Direction of a Play - Jim Ruttman
·      Outstanding Production of a Historical Drama

The 2023 spring musical, Be More Chill, received nine nominations:

·      Outstanding Achievement in Contemporary Costume Design for a Musical - Bettina Bierly
·      Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Design for a Musical - Nicholas Marmo
·      Outstanding Achievement in Scenic Design for a Musical - Jim Ruttman
·      Outstanding Achievement in New Media/Special Effects - Paul Fisher, Nicholas Marmo
·      Outstanding Achievement by a Dance Ensemble in a Musical
·      Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Contemporary Musical - Daniel Raimer
·      Outstanding Acting Ensemble in a Contemporary Musical
·      Outstanding Achievement in the Direction of a Musical - Jim Ruttman
·      Outstanding Production of a Contemporary Musical

The goal of the MSU Theatre Night Awards is to promote and advance the commitment to high-quality play production in New Jersey's secondary schools. The awards, which are run by the University's Department of Theatre, honor the accomplishments and achievement of both students and educators in the areas of performance, direction, design and technical theatre, as well as outstanding productions in the following genres: Drama, Comedy, Classical and New Work.

The awards ceremony will be held on Monday, May 20.
