Middle School Students in Action: Learning Through Service

Morristown Beard School Middle School students recently participated in a series of community service experiences designed to foster empathy, leadership, and civic engagement. Each grade participated in a unique service experience designed to connect classroom learning with real-world impact.

6th Grade — Interfaith Food Pantry

Mrs. Forte's 6th grade advisory visited the Interfaith Food Pantry, where they learned how to become “Hunger Ambassadors". Students toured the facility, seeing firsthand where food is stored, the kitchen where cooking classes are held, and the gardens that provide fresh produce for those in need. They asked thoughtful questions, showed genuine interest in helping others, and even donated 52 pounds of food. They look forward to returning with another group of students soon to continue supporting the local community and addressing food insecurity.

7th Grade — The Neighborhood House

The 7th graders spent time at The Neighborhood House, where Mr. Zuck’s advisory worked with preschool students. Our students read books aloud, played games, painted, and assisted teachers with classroom activities. The experience offered meaningful opportunities for mentorship and connection with younger children.

8th Grade — LifeTown

Sra. Arroyave's 8th grade advisory visited LifeTown, a simulated city where students helped individuals practice real-world skills in a supportive and encouraging environment. Some students painted nails in a salon, while others directed traffic, staffed the medical center, or helped to serve ice cream. Through these roles, students helped participants build confidence and independence in everyday life situations.

These service-learning experiences highlight the Middle School’s commitment to community engagement and to living out MBS values through hands-on learning and meaningful connection.
