MBS Hosts College Essay Writing Workshop

MBS Hosts College Essay Writing Workshop

Recently, the MBS College Counseling Office hosted a college essay writing workshop featuring guest speakers Robert Cusella and Candace Hightower from the Saint Joseph’s University Admission Department.  More than 100 MBS students and parents participated in the webinar.

As part of the presentation, Mr. Cusella discussed how colleges use the essay when making a decision. He also offered tips for brainstorming and writing a successful essay.

He underscored the importance of being authentic and to write from your heart, not your head.

Ms. Hightower discussed some of the essays that really stood out to her as an admission officer. “To me, I think there’s something that can be really beautiful in the mundane,” she said. “One student talked about how he got this identity wearing a fanny pack around his town and it had to do with his effort to get more organized. Another student wrote about her nickname and how it has changed throughout the years… showing the changes and growth she has made.”

At the end of the webinar, MBS parents and students were able to ask specific questions of the panelists.

In case you missed the event, it is available here.
