MBS Honors Upper School Students for Dedication to Community Service Work

At a special awards ceremony on Friday, April 24, Morristown Beard School proudly honored more than 100 Upper School students for their extraordinary dedication to community service. These students have gone above and beyond in giving back—embodying the true spirit of leadership, empathy, and action.

At MBS, volunteerism isn’t just encouraged, t’s a core part of the student experience. With community service built into the curriculum for grades 9–12, students are not only meeting a requirement—they’re making a real impact.

Their efforts extend far beyond campus, enriching lives, strengthening communities, and shaping them into compassionate, responsible citizens.

This celebration was more than just an awards ceremony, it was a powerful reminder of what young people can achieve when they lead with heart and purpose.

As part of the awards ceremony, The Morristown School Class of 1958 Award for Humanitarian Action was presented to Sarah Marine '26. The award recognizes a student’s record of humanitarian deeds and awareness, as well as his/her recognition that with one’s privilege comes a responsibility to care about and contribute to the well-being of others. Sarah earned 182 service hours by acting as a Volunteer Emergency Medical Technician with The Summit First Aid Squad for the past three years. She is a certified active EMT, calmly handling real emergencies after nearly 200 hours of training. Additionally, she serves on the Junior Board of The Overlook Foundation at Overlook Medical Center raising over $150,000.  Sarah also finds time to be an Academic Tutor at Central Presbyterian Church, has led food drives, served as captain of our blood drive, mentored on the soccer field, and worked with young campers.

As Dr. Howells said at her Cum Laude induction, “Sarah embodies what it means to lead with both intellect and heart.”

This year’s Frederick Cross Remington Award was presented to Marilee Vartanian '26. The award is given by the Remington family to the student who shows genuine concern for others and diligently devotes time and effort to community service. Marilee earned 122 service hours by volunteering with The Special Olympics. This organization is near and dear to her heart because her brother is a participant.
One of the events she volunteered at this year was Millburn's “Rocktober Fest,” where she was a spokesperson for the Special Olympics and spread awareness of local events.  In addition to being a spokesperson, Marilee helps coach the basketball and swim teams.

Beyond the Special Olympics, Marilee also serves as the President of the Community Service Club, Vice-President of the SGA, is a leader of Bridges, and attended the Habitat for Humanity Spring Break trip twice in her high school career.
