MBS Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Eddie Franz

As part of its Homecoming & Reunion Weekend on October 22 and 23, Morristown Beard School celebrated the life and legacy of beloved teacher and coach Eddie Franz, who passed away last summer after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

The weekend began with an Alumni Basketball Game as 20 former players honored their coach by hitting the court in Simon Athletic Center one more time. Before the game, the School unveiled a banner celebrating Coach Franz’s legacy which included more than 400 wins, eight conference titles, and four prep championships.

On Sunday, October 23, MBS hosted an emotional Celebration of Life for Eddie Franz in Founders Hall that included speakers, video tributes, and a vocal performance.  Members of the community shared stories about Eddie and the profound impact he had on so many lives.

In addition, the School announced the creation of two endowed funds in Eddie’s honor — The Eddie Franz Endowed Scholarship Fund and The Eddie Franz Endowed Chair for Wellness.  To learn more about these funds and how you can make a gift, visit www.mbs.net/support-mbs/eddie-franz-endowed-funds or contact Betsy Patterson, Director of Advancement, at 973-532-7524 or bpatterson@mbs.net.

Throughout his 39 years at MBS, Eddie served as a teacher of history and constitutional law, as well as the boys varsity basketball coach and the School's guidance and crisis management director. He also coached boys varsity tennis from 1983-1999 and again from 2011-2014, earning over 200 wins.

Along with his work at MBS, Eddie spent nearly 35 summers as the Director of LifeCamp. Located in Pottersville, LifeCamp’s mission is to provide academic enrichment, artistic expression and athletic opportunities in a safe outdoor space for Newark students.
