Marketing Executive Speaks to Career Connections Group

Morristown Beard School’s new Career Connections group hosted its first speaker on Friday, May 5 as Kim Hughes, Senior Vice President of Marketing Communications for Mutual of America, gave the students a crash course in marketing, discussed her career path, and answered questions.

Ms. Hughes has served as Senior Vice President of Marketing Communications at Mutual of America since 2019. Prior to that she was Director of Communications for Broadridge Financial Solutions and Director of Marketing Strategy at TIAA-CREF. She received both her B.A. in Organizational Behavioral Studies and Communications and her M.S. in Communications and Public Relations from New York University.

In her presentation, Ms. Hughes gave an overview of the “5 m’s of marketing” (mission, money, message, media, and measurement) before discussing the advantages of a good marketing strategy, types of marketing, companies that implement strong marketing plans, and personal branding. She emphasized that an array of careers that fall under the marketing umbrella.

“No matter where you might want to work, marketing touches all industries,” said Ms. Hughes.

Career Connections was recently launched by MBS sophomores Sarah Freeman ’25 and Kimi Freeman ’25 and aims to connect MBS students with high-achieving professionals and help them to explore possible career trajectories in a learning environment. Once a month, the group will host sessions during Collaborative or lunch periods in Kirby Chapel or the Center for Academic Writing where students can hear from professionals in various fields such as law, computer science, marketing, psychology, sports medicine, and more.
