Carole Hafferty, Esq., a partner at Callagy Law firm, visited campus on Wednesday, February 28 to speak with the Career Connections group about her career path, her experience clerking for a Justice of the Supreme Court of Connecticut, and her tips for aspiring lawyers.
Ms. Hafferty specializes in handling all aspects of family law, including spousal support, equitable division of assets and liabilities, division of closely held businesses, high net worth divorces, child support, child custody disputes, relocation, cohabitation disputes, termination/modification of alimony and post-judgment enforcement issues. After earning a Bachelor’s degree from Providence College, she graduated from Suffolk University School of Law and later served as an Appellate Law Clerk to the Honorable David M. Borden of the Supreme Court of Connecticut.
In her presentation, Ms. Hafferty gave an overview of what lawyers do, the different areas of practice, and the many different settings where lawyers work. She also discussed applying for law school, preparing for the bar exam, and completing a clerkship.
“There’s no ‘right’ major and there are no ‘right’ classes to take to become a lawyer. I was a business major in college, but I would advise you to pursue a major in college that is of interest to you,” she told the students. “Above all, the writing piece of being a lawyer is huge. It’s important to write and communicate well.”
