Last weekend, The Collective Bookstore in Verona was bustling as MBS junior Kimi Freeman ’25 signed (and sold out of) copies of her Taylor Swift-inspired holiday novel, ‘Tis The Damn Season. Kimi wrote and self-published the novel as part of last year’s Independent Study project with Erinn Salge, Director of Anderson Library.
Kimi’s novel, which was inspired by the Taylor Swift song of the same title, is a contemporary romance designed to “break your heart and then put it right back together.” The story features a newly-canceled Hollywood startlet, the boy she never got over, and a Christmas they’ll never forget.
The book was recently highlighted in People magazine as one of 17 books that reference Taylor Swift song titles and lyrics.
“‘Tis the Damn Season' has such a unique vibe and aesthetic compared to other songs I’ve listened to," said Kimi. "There’s a clear second chance romance aspect to it, and this sort of ‘star-crossed lovers’ vibe which is obviously perfect for a romance. Like all of the other songs on folklore and evermore it really tells a story which is what called me to write this novel. The title perfectly encapsulates the feelings of lost love and angst during the holiday season, which both the song and novel have.”
Kimi began working on the novel in July of 2022 and honed her craft with help from Ms. Salge. In addition to writing, Kimi’s Independent Study project involved working with a developmental editor and cover designer, building her author brand, and creating an in-depth book marketing strategy.
