ICP Students Gain New Perspectives on Innovation and Creative Thinking

ICP students recently welcomed Nadim Yacteen P’29 for an engaging and thought-provoking talk on How Innovation Happens. Drawing on his experience as the creator of the Precedent-Driven Innovation approach and a managing partner at Recombinators, Mr. Yacteen helped students see that innovation is not about sudden flashes of genius moment, but a method. It is about learning how to look at challenges in new and meaningful ways.

Throughout the session, Mr. Yacteen encouraged students to rethink what it really means to be creative. He explained that inspiration often comes from studying what already exists and finding powerful ways to combine ideas from different fields. By reframing problems and asking better questions, innovators can unlock opportunities that traditional thinking often overlooks. Students explored how shifting the way a challenge is framed can completely change the kinds of solutions that emerge, and why the most successful innovators are often those who stay curious, observant, and open to learning from the past.

Mr. Yacteen also emphasized that people, not companies, drive innovation. He shared research showing that innovative environments grow out of strong leadership, clear purpose, and teams that are empowered to experiment and implement their own ideas. He highlighted how effective innovation depends on having a specific problem in mind, being actively engaged, and allowing space for unexpected connections to form.

In addition to his professional work, Mr. Yacteen has designed and taught innovation and strategy programs at leading institutions, including Columbia Business School and Stanford Graduate School of Business. His visit offered ICP students a practical and inspiring look at how creative thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration can shape the future, and how each student can begin developing an innovative mindset right now.

Thank you, Nadim Yacteen, for sharing your insight, expertise, and inspiration with our ICP students.
