From Markets to Monuments: MBS Students Experience Greece

As part of Morristown Beard School’s Global Studies program, students recently traveled to Greece for an immersive experience that blended culture, history, and hands-on learning.

The trip began with a Greek cooking experience that took students beyond the classroom and into the heart of local life. Accompanied by a chef, they explored a neighborhood market, selecting fresh ingredients before returning to the kitchen to prepare traditional dishes, including spanakopita, tzatziki, and a classic Greek dessert. The experience offered a meaningful introduction to Greek cuisine and the role food plays in daily life and community.

Students also visited a family-run ceramics workshop located on a working farm. There, they learned about traditional Greek ceramic styles and techniques from artisans who sustain the craft through generations of family collaboration. In addition to observing the process, students had the opportunity to engage directly with the art form and gain a deeper appreciation for its cultural significance.

The group explored some of Greece’s most iconic historical landmarks, including the Acropolis and the Parthenon. Walking through these ancient sites provided students with a tangible connection to the civilizations they have studied, bringing history to life in a powerful and memorable way.

The journey continued at Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Students walked through the historic grounds, including the tunnel used by ancient athletes, and stepped onto the original stadium. There, they had the opportunity to race one another, experiencing firsthand the scale and spirit of the site.

Through experiences like these, the Global Studies program empowers students to engage directly with the world around them, fostering curiosity, cultural understanding, and a lasting connection to global communities.
