Emily Reitman '24 Presents Independent Study Work on Genealogy

Today, MBS junior Emily Reitman ’24 gave a presentation in Kirby Chapel about the results of her first semester Independent Study work on genealogy.

During the semester, Emily worked to create as complete a family tree as possible, and she discussed the various resources that she used to discover her family’s history. Head of Upper School Ryan Liese served as her faculty advisor for the project.

In addition to the students and faculty in attendance, members of Emily’s family were also able to attend the presentation.

The Independent Studies Program at MBS has grown significantly since its inception in 2007. The program offers motivated and high-achieving students the opportunity to work with expert faculty in delving deeply into an area of interest. The student’s strong commitment is translated into projects that demonstrate active learning, creativity, intellectual curiosity and the ability to work on one’s own.

The Independent Study Program encourages students to expand their intellectual curiosity and explore an intellectual area in depth, under the guidance of a selected faculty member with a special expertise or interest in the field.
