Dr. Kamali Thompson Speaks to Future Physicians Club

Thanks to Dr. Kamali Thompson, a third-year orthopedic surgery resident at Temple University, who visited campus on Tuesday, December 12 to offer advice to members of the Future Physicians Club and discuss her career path.

Dr. Thompson, who competed internationally in fencing for Team USA and was the 2016 National Champion, encouraged the students to set themselves apart by following their passions.

“Don’t be afraid to get involved in activities unrelated to medicine,” she told the students. “Your application to college or medical school needs to show you’re well-rounded.”

At the same time that Dr. Thompson matriculated into medical school, she began competing internationally for Team USA. She was a 14-time national medalist, an international team medalist, a member of the 2019 national team, and an alternate to the 2020 U.S. women’s saber Olympic team.

She is currently working towards becoming a sports medicine surgeon, and offered the students advice on creating a resume and a personal statement for college or medical school applications.

“When drafting a personal statement, most applicants reference a medical experience a family member had,” she said. “Try to focus on a different experience and make sure the first and last paragraph are impactful.”

She also advised the students to shadow different healthcare professionals. “Reach out to different specialists to get an idea of what you like and don’t like,” she said.

Finally, she told the students that they should never hesitate to seek assistance in their journey towards a career in medicine. “This path is extremely difficult. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re struggling,” she said.
