For his Independent Study final project, MBS senior Connor Downey ’22 moderated a student roundtable discussion about Critical Race Theory on Friday, May 13.
This semester, Connor has been researching Critical Race Theory (CRT) as part of his Independent Study, “Power to the People,” with guidance from MBS Associate Director of DEIB A’Dorian Murray-Thomas. In the course, he has also been examining social movements throughout history.
Connor led a lively and informative roundtable on CRT with nine Upper School students. After discussing a definition for CRT, he posed a number of thought-provoking questions including:
· Have you encountered CRT in the classroom?
· Why is this a hot topic right now and why is CRT hard for some people to accept?
· Why do some people think CRT is problematic?
· How does not talking about CRT affect the people who aren’t being talked about?
