Connecting Classroom to Coral Reefs: Students Take Learning to the Bahamas

During Spring Break, 16 Upper School students from Morristown Beard School, accompanied by two faculty chaperones, traveled to The Island School in the Bahamas for an immersive, hands-on learning experience centered on marine ecology and sustainable living.

Based on the island of Eleuthera, students engaged directly with the natural environment through a wide range of experiential activities. They snorkeled and SCUBA dived on coral reefs, explored caves, investigated coral reef ecology, dissected a lionfish to better understand invasive species, and examined the formation of ooids. Their learning extended to sustainable systems as they helped maintain the school’s aquaponics operation, which included harvesting lettuce for that evening's dinner.

Students also participated in a night wade to observe marine invertebrates beneath the dock and explored a mangrove tidal creek by wading and floating through its unique ecosystem. Beyond the academic program, the group experienced local culture, history, and adventure, sampling Bahamian cuisine at Sheryl’s, jumping from High Rock, taking part in the Island School’s signature Run-Swim, and exploring the island by foot, bike, and water.

The trip provided a powerful opportunity for students to connect classroom concepts to real-world environmental and societal challenges while living and learning in a dynamic, place-based setting.
