Court was in session in Kirby Chapel on Friday, January 11th as students from Mr. Franz’s Constitutional Law class staged their final mock trial of the semester.
This fictitious but timely case involved issues surrounding affirmative action and Harvard University’s admission practices. The petitioners, Students for Fair Admissions, argued that Harvard’s admission’s process is unjust because the university uses a personality rating index that discriminates against Asians. Representatives of the university argued that their practices are justifiable and fair, and that the school is committed to diversity.
After the closing arguments, Mr. Franz led a general discussion about whether affirmative action should still exist to offset the many years of historical discrimination.
