Bhide '23 and Taylor '22 Named Finalists in Morristown Onstage Competition

Congratulations to MBS singers Maya Bhide ’23 and Zac Taylor ’22, who were both named finalists in the 14th annual Morristown Onstage competition. They were selected from hundreds of other contestants and will now compete against six other finalists in the 18 & Under category when the event will be streamed on March 10 at 7 p.m.

Bhide, who sang  “Hero“ by Mariah Carey for her audition, said she was excited to be selected. “I was thrilled and honored to be picked as a finalist,” she said. “I felt a great sense of accomplishment to be chosen from the hundreds of other people who auditioned.”

At MBS, Bhide sings with the Upper School Chorus and has appeared on the Founders Hall stage numerous times for assemblies and in the musicals Cabaretand Honk, Jr.  She has been singing since she was 5, and takes voice and piano lessons outside of school.

“The best way to get better at my craft is to perform, and when possible, in a competitive environment,” she said. “That’s why I decided to compete.”

Taylor, a junior at MBS, is also a member of the Upper School Chorus and has performed for the community as part of All-School Meeting.  He recently sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” as a duet with Bhide for the MBS holiday All-School Meeting, although the students will be competing individually in the Morristown Onstage competition.

For his audition, Taylor sang “Best Part” by Daniel Caesar — a song he will also perform for the finals. “I decided to audition because I love singing and entertaining people,” he said. “It’s an honor to be selected alongside such talented finalists and I’m excited for the livestream show on March 10!”

The students will compete for a $1,000 cash prize, a $500 “Audience Choice” prize, a $250 Rossoff Rising Star Award, and an invitation to sing the National Anthem before a New York Jets game. Winners will also be asked to perform live at next year’s show which everyone hopes will be live at the Mayo Performing Arts Center once again.

Tickets for the virtual Morristown Onstage competition will be available soon through the Mayo Performing Arts Center.
