Architecture Students Present Pavilion Designs

Students in Matt Martino’s Architectural Design Studio class presented their first semester projects to their classmates and a group of panelists this week in the Center for Innovation & Design (CID).

The projects — in which the students had to design a pavilion by distorting a 6’0” cube — represented several months of research, design work, drawing and model-making fundamentals.  Each student presented their work and received constructive feedback from their peers as well as from professionals from NK Architects and members of the MBS faculty.

In their presentations, the students traced the steps in their creative process, from research and early prototypes to the final product. They spoke about materials they would use in constructing their pavilions, how the structures related to their surroundings, and why they selected their particular site (whose locations ranged from the Jersey Shore to an island off the coast of Italy).

They also discussed design challenges they encountered along the way and the ways they would modify and improve their designs if given more time.
