There was plenty of pageantry and athletic drama on Wednesday, April 17th as the Latin Club transformed Burke Field into a Circus Maximus and staged the 6th annual series of chariot races.
Latin teacher Michael McGrann presided over the festivities clad in a toga, and signaled the start of the races by dropping a cloth known as a mappa. The capacity crowd was treated to plenty of excitement as the racers competed in three heats, sprinting 50 yards on the turf field.
Halftime events included the ever-popular “pin the dagger on the Emperor (Headmaster Peter Caldwell),” gladiator fights, and a footrace. Fabulous prizes were awarded to the winners.
In the final race, the team of James Cunningham ’19, Arik Morton ’19, and Matthew Dertouzos ’19 emerged victorious in their unconventional “hand truck and rake” design, narrowly defeating a very competitive field of racers.
