“Easel Boy,” the paintings of MBS alumnus Josh Rockland ’03 will be on display in the Phoebe Stiles King ’49 Gallery on the first floor of the Math & Science Center with an opening reception scheduled for Tuesday, September 17th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Rockland’s paintings have a personal, narrative quality that employs autobiographical elements to nostalgic effect. His favorite subjects include his childhood home’s Victorian architecture and furniture.
“In my studio hang photos of previous paintings to keep my conscious of recurring subjects, themes and motifs,” said Rockland. “I employ an object collection, photo library and sketchbook of quirky items such as ties, furniture, and antique objects as source material. By repeating these, paintings relate and speak to each other. I also keep a list of painting titles, that are short, descriptive, and often ambiguous.”
Rockland’s paintings will be on display in the Phoebe Stiles King ’49 Gallery through mid-October. Stop by and enjoy!
