8th Graders Build Wind Turbines and Conduct Electromagnetic Experiments

This week, 8th Grade students in Mr. Deisher’s science classes built wind turbines and performed electromagnetic experiments after reading the book “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.”

The book focuses on how William Kamkwamba taught himself to create electricity for his village in Malawi.

The 8th Graders learned to design a controlled experiment with an independent variable and a dependent variable, graph date, and most importantly, learn from failure throughout the process of implementing their experiment.

“This unit develops empathy as well as design thinking skills, which they will use in their upcoming Change The World projects,” said Mr. Deisher. “The students find an area in the world based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and use their science and engineering skills to find a solution.”
