6th Graders Teach 10th Grade English Students about U.S. Southern Border Crisis

A group of 6th Graders from Lisa Swanson’s Geography class recently presented their knowledge about the U.S. southern border crisis to Sam Goodman’s 10th Grade English students, who have been studying Latin American poetry and literature.

The 6th Graders discussed the various “push” factors (including environmental conditions, violence, government corruption, and poverty) that are causing South and Central Americans to leave their homelands in record numbers. The students underscored the point that conditions for the migrants are often so poor at home that they are willing to risk their lives in the hope of a better future. They showed a video about The Darién Gap, an imposing and lawless stretch of mountainous rainforest on one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes.

Great job by 6th Grade students Roshan Kothari ’29, Caroline Lembrich ’29, Kai Mittler ’29, Jonah Simon ’29, Rahul Vaidyanathan ’29, and Timothy Wei ’29.
