Melissa Rachel began teaching English at Morristown-Beard School following the completion of her undergraduate studies in 2014. With a major in English Secondary Education and a minor in Spanish, she graduated from The College of New Jersey eager to pursue a career as a middle school English teacher—an aspiration that was confirmed during her own 8th grade year.
At MBS, Melissa has taught 7th grade English, as well as the 7th and 8th grade English Workshop courses. With a commitment to helping her students develop the faculties for life-long success outside of the classroom, her teaching philosophy is grounded in the principles of choice and authenticity when it comes to reading and writing. She appreciates the close-knit community and small class sizes at MBS that truly allow each student’s individuality to be recognized and celebrated.
During her tenure at Morristown-Beard, Melissa has served as a 7th grade advisor as well as the assistant coach for the Middle School girls soccer team and the fitness program. Additionally, she leads the Middle School Consortium Forensics competition, has advised the MSMBS News Club, and will serve as the new editor for the Middle School literary magazine, Mélange.
With a love of learning, Melissa continues to further her education by completing graduate degree coursework each summer at the University of New Hampshire through their Literacy Institutes. She is also working towards becoming a certified yoga teacher and completed Breathe For Change’s 200-hour Wellness and Yoga Teacher Training for Educators in the summer of 2018.
Melissa looks forward to teaching 8th grade English and bringing her passion for yoga and mindfulness to the MBS community in the 2018-2019 school year. When she is not teaching or studying, Melissa enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time outdoors.
