B.A., Brigham Young University
The breadth and depth of Boni Luna’s professional experience testifies to her sense of education as a vocation as well as a career.
Prior to arriving at MBS in 2012, Boni served as the assistant head of a middle school, chaired a foreign language department, taught Spanish courses, coordinated service learning, directed a foreign studies program, and served as a liaison to the NJ SEEDS program. Presently serving as Head of Middle School at MBS, she draws on all of these past experiences, combining them to realize a vision of middle school education as one of interdependent social, emotional, and academic learning.
Boni’s time at Morristown-Beard has been marked by innovative signature programs, an integration of the visual and performing arts into the daily rhythm of middle school life, and increased collaboration of teachers within and across disciplines. An emigrant from Cuba at a young age, she believes that a modern education must afford students with a global perspective, and she enjoys working with teachers and colleagues to ensure that such a broad perspective permeates lessons and programs.
More than anything else, Boni enjoys the energy and variety of life and learning that she encounters each day in the Middle School, be it in meetings with colleagues, visits to classrooms and performances, or casual conversations with students. “MBS supports me in the same way that it supports our students,” Boni says. “It gives me resources and opportunities to try new approaches and develop better programs, and most of all, it’s given me a community of educators who enjoy working together, and students who really take advantage of whatever we offer. My job is keeping learning at the forefront of our efforts and student well-being at the center of our decisions.”
