Deanna Whelan graduated with her Master’s Degree in Educational Technology Leadership from George Washington University in 2022. She was the winner of the Jere Trout Award which is given to one student every year who demonstrates excellence in Educational Technology Leadership for her initiative “Content Creation Across the Curriculum”.
She joined the Academic Systems Group at Morristown Beard in 2015. She was interested in joining Morristown Beard because it was one of the first schools in the country to have a 1:1 iPad program and use it successfully in the classroom.
Before joining MBS, Deanna taught bilingual classes in a school in the south of Spain for one year. During her time there she tutored English and worked as a freelance Illustrator. She has been in independent schools for the past 12 years mixing her love for technology with Illustration and teaching.
Deanna teaches Digital Sketch & Draw, Digital Illustration, Graphic Design & Marketing, and Graphic Design Agency in the Middle and Upper School during the school year. She has also taught Tech Design Studio, Imagineering Ed Tech, and Digital Sketch Bootcamp at the Summer Institute. Her classes incorporate professional drawing tools like Wacom drawing tablets, the Adobe Suite, and emerging cutting-edge technologies using iPads and Apple Pencils. She believes in teaching art fundamentals and incorporating them into all her classes. She draws inspiration from professionals in the field ranging from published authors, freelancers, and enthusiasts. When she is not teaching, Deanna is involved in the daily workings of the technology at the school, including professional development for faculty and student training, and finding innovative ways to use the tools found on campus.
